British Maritime Metal Fabrication Comes to an End

shipyard metal fabrication

The history of British ship building, with its associated metal fabrication facilities, came to an end this year. With the relocation from Portsmouth of Britain’s last remaining metal fabrication shipyard, it seems that ship building in the UK may well be a thing of the past.

The History of Portsmouth’s Shipyard

Towards the end of 2014, shipbuilding in Portsmouth finally wound down after more than 500 years. The decision, which was made by the shipyard owners BAE, saw the closure of Portsmouth’s shipyard with the relocation of many of its works to Scotland.
The historic shipyard has been using various methods of metal fabrication and maritime engineering to build advanced warships for the Royal Navy for over 500 years. The important dockyard was built in 1495 and was then granted royal status by King Charles II in 1670 after the creation of the modern Royal Navy.

Loss of Metal Fabrication Jobs from UK Built Warships

The closure of the shipyard leads to the potential loss of 1,775 jobs - 940 in Portsmouth and then 835 in Glasgow, Rosyth and Filton, near Bristol.
BAE Systems is a global provider of defence and security products, which includes warships. They decided to move the base to Scotland last year, creating a lot of unrest for the staff who contributed their highly skilled engineering abilities like metal fabrication, to the country’s defense industry.
The UK may well see some serious consequences for the future of shipbuilding and therefore the defense of the countries shores.

With Electric Garage Doors, Worthing Residents Have got Life Sorted

garage door repairs Worthing, garage door repairs Sussex, electric garage doors Worthing

Every year, the majority of home owners will have a little money to spend on making improvements to their property. For some people, there will only be enough cash to replace a carpet, renew a domestic appliance or carry out a few essential repairs. For others, there may be sufficient money in the kitty to install a brand new kitchen or perhaps to completely redecorate several rooms, giving the place a completely new look.

For those who are looking to make a few changes that will make life simpler, it might be a good idea to consider electric garage doors. Worthing is one of those towns which have a lot of properties with garages, and many of them are still opened and closed manually on a daily basis. It would be highly convenient for owners to come home at night and not have to get out of the car in order to access their parking facility.

If you ever thought such an installation would be prohibitively expensive, it is perhaps time to think again. By contacting a specialist in garage door repairs, Sussex residents can be sure they get the best service and the very latest operating systems. It always makes sense to seek out the finest experts in order to get the job done properly.

http://www.prestigedoors.co.uk/garage-doors/

When it comes to garage door repairs, Sussex home owners know what to do

Needless to say, there will almost certainly be a number of other home improvements which will be on the list of possibilities, but there is something wonderful about being able to drive home on a cold and rainy night and not have to leave the car at all. We all know just how unpleasant it is to get wet at such a time, even if you only have to go outside for a few seconds.

If you’re currently considering a call to someone who can carry out garage door repairs, Worthing home owners may be able to recommend a particular specialist. While the expert is looking at the repair itself, it could be worth asking how much it will cost to ‘go electric’ instead. Life is supposed to be about enjoyment, after all.

Those lucky men and women who have already had these doors installed will know just how nice it is to stay dry and warm when they return home. This is the case every day, of course, but it can be particularly welcoming in the winter when the days are shorter and the temperatures far lower.

Thanks to Business Fire Alarms, Surrey Companies are Ready

It isn’t always easy for Finance Directors to know which items to spend money on and which ones need to be refused. Balancing the books in any commercial organisation is a difficult and complicated process, especially when the economy is going through a difficult phase, but nobody ever said such a job was going to be a simple one. Difficult decisions are always difficult to make.

http://www.hestonapexltd.co.uk/fire-alarms-guildford/

Sometimes there are general business principles which apply equally to the smallest one-person operations as they do to enormous multi-national conglomerates. Every firm is different, of course, but many important tenets of successful commerce remain the same. One of them is without doubt that you simply cannot skimp when installing business fire alarms. Surrey is home to a wide variety of companies, but they all need to be protected at all times.

The potential harm that can be caused by a fire in a commercial location should be enough to convince even the most cost-conscious Finance Officer to loosen the purse strings. A fire can cause a great deal of physical damage in no time at all, of course, but there is far more to it than just that. The danger to the lives of employees and customers should never be underestimated at any time. This has to the number one priority for everyone involved in the business.

With Business Fire Alarms, Surrey is a Safer County

Many of those who have to make such decisions often forget about the damage that can be caused to more abstract aspects of the company. If a business location is badly damaged by fire, some customers may decide they no longer want to use that company any more. They may have used an alternative during the rebuilding process and may understandably feel that they just don’t want to make the switch once again.

Such an outcome is highly likely if it takes a considerable amount of time to re-open. The longer your premises remains closed, the less likelihood there is of attracting all of your previous customers back. It’s often a race against time to get back to normal. When using commercial fire alarm installers, Guildford business owners know how important it is to be back to normal as quickly as possible.

Choosing business protection is similar to selecting the most appropriate home fire alarms. Surrey has a thriving commercial sector, and every owner and director knows all about the importance of remaining as efficient as they can. Without this efficiency, many companies will soon be overtaken and left behind by their rivals.

The History Behind Common Brighton Pub Names

brighton pubs

We usually take pub names for granted, but there is a history behind the names and the hanging signs that state them. Everyone knows a local ‘King’s Head’ or a ‘Queen’s Arms’, but where do these really popular names actually come from?

Before there were pub names

Pubs didn’t always have names and in the Middle Ages.  Alehouses, much like other trades premises, were usually recognised by a familiar object hanging over the door. A shoemaker might hang a shoe or a boot outside his workshop, whereas the local farrier would hang a horseshoe.  So the way to differentiate between pubs was to name them after whatever familiar landmark they were near, so pubs in Brighton would have a few choices such as ‘alehouse by the sea’ or ‘alehouse near queen’s park’.

The change to proper names came about over time and may have been due to the increase in the number of local alehouses that needed to be identified.

So what do the names mean?

The most common pub name in the UK, with around 600 or so dotted around the country, is ‘The Red Lion’. The name comes from the Duke of Lancaster in the 14th century and later James I of England in 1603. Both of these influential men had the heraldic red lion on their coat of arms.
‘The Crown’ has been popular through the ages as it reflects loyalty to the reigning monarchy, as do pubs named after specific royalty such as ‘The Prince Albert’.  The same applies to any name with the word ‘arms’ in, such as ‘The Queen’s Arms’ which usually refers to a coat of arms. One exception to this would be ‘The King’s Head’ which relates back to when King Henry VIII broke away from the catholic church.  Many pubs took the name ‘The Pope’s Head’ as a joke, but to avoid offending the volatile king, they later renamed their inns after him.

Other famous names include ‘The Rose and Crown’, which celebrates the end of the War of Roses in 1485 and ‘Wagon and Horses’ or ‘Coach and Horses’ simply mean that the alehouse would take in stagecoaches and horses for the night. So, many of these pub names are actually incredibly simple once you understand the history.

There are many pubs in Brighton and around Sussex that have these names and its quite fun to take a tour of  Brighton and see how many of these not-so-cryptic names you can find!

Finding your Bearings when You Move Home

A growing number of people are planning to move home in the coming months, and for many of them it may not be easy to find their bearings. This is especially true for men and women who move to a completely new area, because they may have trouble locating the providers of goods and services which they may need. It can be a somewhat daunting experience for many.
When seeking out the finest home fire alarms, Surrey newcomers know all they have to do is search the web. There are a number of high quality professionals to be found on the Internet, and if the new arrival is not overly web-savvy, the good old phone directory will come in just as handy. It will not take long to arrange an appointment with the expert at a time that suits.
Needless to say, there are a great many more things that need to be sorted when you move to a new area. Parents of young children will need to look at the various schools in the region, and a large amount of research may have to be carried out in order to ascertain which of these establishments will provide the right education in the best environment for the development of the sons and daughters.
Getting from A to B
It may take a while to learn all about the local public transport networks as well. These may be vital for getting to and from work, so it makes sense to check out the bus routes and train connections which are to be found in the area. In large towns and cities, there is likely to be a great deal more choice for commuters, but in quieter areas there may only be one single bus route.
Of course, it may be that the newcomer needs to find a job in the first place. If this is the case, the nearest job centre might end up being the first port of call, or perhaps a trip to the newsagents to scan the pages of the various local newspapers. With the apparent onset of an economic recession in the air, there is likely to be even more people on the move in the next few months.

If you are looking to move to a new location soon, you will want to look into the locale at the earliest opportunity. Thanks to the power of the worldwide web, you will be able to do much of this research from the comfort of your own home.

Goodwood Revival - A Boost For Sussex Hotels

Anyone who has ever been to the The Goodwood Revival will be able to tell you what an iconic event it has become.  It is held at the Goodwood racetrack every year right in the heart of West Sussex, and it's a firm favorite that keeps the local West Sussex hotels booked up for the weekend with petrol heads, nostalgia fans and lovers of events in general.  It celebrates a classic period of UK motor sporting history, and has developed into an all-inclusive trip down memory lane with lots of visitors wearing period costumes while they browse the classic cars, watch the racing and even enjoy flying displays of WWII military aircraft.

The initial idea for the event came about in 1993 when Lord March was relishing the initial success of the festival of speed hill-climb event, which attracted over 30,000 visitors.  This showed there was real interest in something just that little bit special in the motor-sports calendar, and the potential of reviving motor racing on the original Goodwood circuit.

The track had been a mecca for British motor racing during the period 1948 to 1966, after which the then owner of the course, Freddie March, decided that racing cars had become just too fast and powerful to be safe on the track.

The problem was that while the idea of reviving classic car racing in the this corner of West Sussex seemed straight forward, bringing it about was anything but.  The world of motor sports had developed considerably in the intervening 27 years, with safety rules and regulations now being prominent at any public racing event.  Finding the right balance between meeting the regulations while retaining as much of the original track experience as possible proved something of a challenge.  However, after a lot of discussion the agreements reached that allowed the racing of classic cars from the 1950s and 60s on a track that, as far as possible, recreated the authentic conditions of the period.

The inaugural revival was held in September 1998, and has become an annual event looked forward to by thousands. It's a three day celebration of all that was great in the heyday of British Motor sports, and as well as racing there are dozens of displays including classic cars, motorbikes and aircraft from the period.  It really is a very loud and proud celebration of an iconic era in British motor-racing history.

Goodwood and Sussex Hotels Delighted
As the revival can attract in excess of 140,000 people, it is a huge boost to both the Goodwood and West Sussex economies.  Goodwood hotels in particular, and West Sussex hotels in general, along with hospitality businesses and local shops and garages all see a significant increases in bookings during this September rush, and the Revival has become major highlight in the regions calendar.

This year the Goodwood Revival takes place 12-14 September.

What You Can See from Sussex Hotels - The South Downs Way

hotels in sussex

The Sussex South Downs are a major attraction for anyone living around or visiting the South Coast Area, and to really enjoy the best that the Downs have to offer, and to see the heart of Sussex up close, you can’t go far wrong by walking the South Downs Way.

The route travels just over 100 miles through the Sussex countryside and is one of the UK’s National Trails. The pathways all follow the old drove-ways that farmers and herders of the past used to transport their animals and wares, and the route traces the escarpment and ridges of the South Downs from Winchester down through West Sussex and ending up at Eastbourne.  It’s ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy a scenic long-distance route and it can be tackled on foot, bike or horseback.  It's also offers excellent day walks for those who only want to tackle the route sections at a time.

Allow Time to Get to Your Sussex Hotels

Most hikers complete the entire walk in 8- 9 days, covering between 12 to 15 miles a day, but it doeas depend on where you’re staying as you'll need to add the distance of coming off the route to get to your hotel or campsite, and then climbing back up to the path in the morning.  For the hardier and more determined there are several campsites along the route.

Goodwood Hotels and Midhurst Hotels

There are several West Sussex hotels available along the route, so exploring sections of the path is convenient if you are staying a little of the track in a places like a Goodwood hotel or a Midhurst Hotel which can make an ideal base for a local stay.  There are also several companies that organise trips along the way and offer services such as moving your baggage between hotels while you walk along the route.

The Best of Sussex – All Year Round

As the route is so well maintained it's suitable to be walked all year round, but it's worth remembering the most popular times are between May and September.  The South Downs provide a tranquil retreat from the busy South Coast area and the London suburbs to the North, and trail passes along the chalk ridges between some of the most picturesque Sussex county towns.  These include Goodwood, Chichester, Midhurst, Pulborough and Worthing, before passing North of the seaside city of Brighton on the way down to Eastbourne.  The ridge line that the route follows for much of the way is elevated above most of these, and so offers wonderful views over the English Channel and Isle of Wight to the south, and wooded Weald and heathland to the north.

And if you're walking the route from North to South, your final leg takes you along the stunning cliff top pathway at Beachy Head.

Management

The South Downs Way is managed by a dedicated team at the South Downs National Park Authority. The financing of the team comes via the South Downs Way Trail Partnership, which is made up of:

  •  The South Downs National Park Authority,
  • Natural England,
  • Hampshire County Council,
  • West Sussex County Council and
  • East Sussex County Council.
